This is part 1 of a 4 part distribution of a fully functional sample of
PC-Shakespeare v1.0, it includes PC-Shakespeare's own files and programs,
and one of the texts, King John. Part 2 has the cooperating programs which
extend your operating system to support PC-Shakespeare. Parts 3 and 4 have
this texts of this sample's other plays; Richard the Second, the two
Henry IV plays, Henry the Fifth, and Henry the Eighth, a default text
editor and a novelty font program. Parts 1 and 2 will install without
parts 3 and 4, but you will only have one play and the program will not know
it so it will get itself in trouble when you try to search the missing
plays. The full sample actually uses about 1.5 meg disk space, parts 1 and 2
only about 600k. During installation the size of the archive files must also
be taken into consideration. Installation draws only the relevant elements
from the programs archived in part 2: After installation you may wish to
explore some of the programs in their own right before deciding on the fate
of the rest of their data in your system. I would ask you to preserve the
PC-Shakespeare distribution package on floppy disk(s) to pass on or upload
to anyone else who might be interested - for some Shakespeare is of great
importance. The installation tries to move a single distribution set into a
a subdirectory and delete all distribution files from the installation
directory. If you put any of the 4 parts inside another archive or onto a
disk for distribution, it would be nice if you would include its PCSHX#.INF,
if available, for online readers etc.
The filenames of the archives are important to the installation program:
It requires the names PCSHX10A., PCSHX10B., PCSHX10C. and PCSHX10D., all
with the file extension 'EXE' for the large self-extracting files. If they
are otherwise named, please rename them. The same names apply to files with
the ZIP extension, but these can only be handled by the installation if you
have PKUNZIP somewhere in your path.
PC-Shakespeare's perfomance is considerably enhanced if you use it with
a disk-caching program.
Installation should begin with all available files in an empty directory
with about 2 meg free. The installation will make two subdirectories, one
called DOCSETC and the other SHX-ARC.
Though PC-Shakespeare is embedded in a hypertext help-system, if you wish to
enter PC-Shakespeare armed at all points, first print the file TUTOR.TXT.

If you are reading this you have either already opened the PCSHX10A.EXE
archive or you know how to. Once that is done, in company of available
other PCSHX archives and with enough free disk space in an otherwise
empty directory, you may install PC-Shakespeare by typing 'INSTALL' <ENTER>.
